Politics; the Force that Drives Nations

· Politics

Every nation in the world relies on the decisions made by politicians in their respective capitals for economic, social, and political development. Politicians have always made decisions that affect destinies either positively, or negatively. History is full of stories about bloody wars, destruction, and human rights abuse, all of which were initiated by decisions made by heads of states. Putin's unprovoked invasion of Ukraine is an example of how politics have the potency to wretch nations, destroy lives, and orchestrate humanitarian crises. In countries that have experienced systemic and structural injustices, politics have been a major trigger for the negative phenomena. In South Africa, apartheid thrived under the watch of a government that was committed to the systemic exclusion of black people, and the propagation of white dominance. In Australia, the pain of the Aboriginal people is solely orchestrated through policies that systematically exclude them from enjoying their country's wealth. The Middle East has become the most volatile region in the world as a result of political decisions. The Israel- Palestine conflict is a classic example of how bad politics can cause untold devastation and strip people of their dignity. Despite Palestinians being the major victims in the conflict, their leaders have continued to derail the peace process by opting for terrorism as a means to their political ends. Africa is the epitome of political confusion and ideological disorientation which has plunged the continent into the abyss of poverty, disease, and conflicts. Elected leaders in Africa prioritize their personal gain over their nation's good, and eventually, their citizenry is deprived of essential services. Therefore, politics affect nations, shape destinies, and even kill! The people in our capitals have the potency to steer the world to prosperity, peace, and development, and they can also render it a deadly place. No one should be neutral on matters of politics. Everyone should get involved in the governance of their country because their voice matters. We can dethrone tyranny, despotism, and authoritarianism and elect humane leaders into office. We can all make our world safer, better, and more advanced.
